My First All-Nighter
2001-05-08 - 5:48 p.m.

Feeling:
Listening to:
Reading/Watching:

There are times and friends and places that can combine into something spectacular, no matter how little money or planning involved.

Two friends and I were feeling wired the night before finals began, and wanted to see a movie. We had no transportation, and after thinking through and discarding every friend with a car, we decided to call a cab at quarter after 10. They were swamped (I know; swamped on a Sunday night? Weird), but we waited.

11:15- We hopped into a taxi with a driver named Rudy who seemed about the same as any other- maybe a bit younger, less scary-looking, and fully fluent in English- and asked him to take us to the cinema. After finally deciding which one (you'd think waiting an hour would be ample time to choose, but we'd spent the time writing an agreement where each bet that the other two would get a boyfriend first) we headed for the movie theater. He started asking about our school, and he was so fully confused about Catholic schools ("Is it taught by nuns?" "Is it all-girls?" "Are you all Catholic?" "Do you have to pray before everything?") that we became more engrossed in explaining to him than watching which way we were going, and soon we ran into a road washed out by rain, and had to turn around. (He offered to deduct the extra mileage from the meter.)

11:45- Arrived at the theater, realized the last showing of ANYTHING was at 10:30, and told the cabbie to head for Blockbuster. Stephanie started talking to a friend on her cel-phone (they called her) and then became engrossed in telling the three of us a story, going so far as to swat the cabbie on the arm and demand, "Listen!" when he dared to pay attention to the road, instead. :oP Then we got to hear some fascinating tales of taxi-driving. You'd be amazed at some of the car-less people in this city.

11:55- Rented 4 movies just in the nick of time, and decided to get some food from Wendy's. They gave us the wrong number of nuggets, the fries were cold and only partially filled, and we had no sauce. Grr. The cabbie decided to go to Jack in the Box across the street for sauce. The drive-thru woman seemed startled that we only wanted ketchup and honey mustard. She kept asking over and over, "But what do you WANT?" Finally it sank through my cloud of late-night insanity and I ordered a small fry to placate her. The guy at the window understood, though. He threw more sauce than we could ever need into a paper bag, and didn't charge us. Hee. He was nice.

12:30- Finally arrived back at the dorm. The cab fare was upwards of thirty dollars. Hooboy. Thank God for Briana's credit card. By this time I'd decided it was time for bed, but I knew I'd never sleep while the other two were watching movies, especially since neither had finals the next day, and thus no reason to rest.

3:45- While rewinding the second movie, I realized that I had to get up at 8:00 that morning. By that point, it would almost be detrimental to go to sleep. I'd be more awake if I just stayed up all night. So we did. And we had a blast, needless to say.

8:00- Two cups of tea apiece, the last of the white cheddar Goldfish, and two bags of popcorn later, I hopped into the shower to get ready for my final. Thank God it was a class I didn't really need to study for.

Nearly fell asleep six times studying for the second final (one I DID have to study for, unfortunately), and decided to eat dinner early and go to bed immediately afterward.

5:00 p.m.- Had some quality time with my pillow.

7:00 a.m. (This morning)- Woke up. Refreshed. Huh, figure that. :) I've decided pulling another all-nighter tonight, however tempting it may be, should probably be delayed until after my last final tomorrow.

P.S.- Rudy-the-cabbie left us his number. His CEL number, not his cab number. Heee. Told us anytime we wanted to try this again, we should call him.
